The 22-year-old ran 4:43.13 to smash a record set in Berlin in 1999, before he was born, by Moroccan great Hicham El Guerrouj, by more than a second and a half. Meanwhile, Australia’s Stewart McSweyn finished third after clocking a time of 4:48.77, shattering a 17-year-old national record. “To break any national record is a huge honour so I’m very happy with tonight’s result and it gives me a lot of confidence leading into the Diamond League final next week in Eugene.

Mr Chalmers’ remarks come after it revealed that Australia’s economic growth in the June quarter has grown by 0.4 per cent from 0.2 per cent. “The national accounts this week provided an important snapshot of our economy – our economy is steady and sturdy in the face of some pretty intense pressure,” Mr Chalmers said during Question Time on Thursday. “We’re optimistic about the future of our economy, the future of our country, but we are realistic about pressures on Australians right now, the way that our economy is slowing and the difficult months that we anticipate ahead.”
