Veteran football coach unsure of next move.
Hueytown coach Greg Patterson talks to players before a game against Bessemer City at Bessemer City High School in Bessemer, Ala., Friday, Sep. 19, 2025. The veteran Hueytown coach announced Tuesday on social media that he’s leaving the program.
“It’s just time,” Patterson said. “There’s no one, two or three reasons and I don’t have anything else lined up. I could still be teaching here next year, I could be at another school or I could be putting up chain-link fence for all I know at this point. It’s just time for me not to be here and I’m not completely excited about what high school athletics has turned into at this point either, so I’m not opposed to getting out.” “Coach Greg Patterson has resigned from his coaching position at Hueytown High School,” read a statement from Jefferson County AD Craig Kanaday. “We cannot thank him enough for all the good things he has done and for his commitment to our student athletes. He has meant so much to the school, the community and to JEFCOED. We wish him nothing but the best in whatever he chooses to do next.” Patterson was a head coach for 11 years, four at Sumiton Christian and seven at Hueytown with a 75-54 career record. The bulk of the wins came at Hueytown, where he was elevated from an assistant in 2019, posting a 61-28 record. He guided the Golden Gophers to the playoffs all seven seasons, including playing for the Class 6A championship in 2021, losing 46-42 to Clay-Chalkville and finishing with a 13-2 record. Both losses came to Clay-Chalkville. Patterson was running the family packing and shipping business when he began helping coach junior high football at Sumiton Christian in 1998. He shut down the business and became a full-time assistant in 2008. He was named head coach in 2009. After leaving Sumiton Christian, Patterson spent one season as an assistant at Minor and two years at Jasper before accepting an assistant coaching position at Hueytown in 2016. When Scott Mansell left, Patterson was hired.“It’s just the whole mentality, like our whole society, that nobody has to do anything hard anymore,” Patterson said. “They just jump and run and chase comfort and that’s everything from parents transferring their kids all over the place to other schools for what they claim is a better situation and rarely it is. If it was, they wouldn’t move two and three times. “It’s from the kids in the building that won’t play anymore because it’s hard and I don’t even fault the kids. The generation of parents we have right now, there’s no accountability. It’s just kind of that whole mindset of being a community. Everybody likes to use the phrase, ‘it takes a village.’ Well, I just don’t think we have a village anymore.”“I think there’s some criteria here that the next guy needs to meet that I’m not able to do,” Patterson said. “I don’t live here in the community and commute about 40 or 45 minutes every day and I just think there’s some things that the next person needs to do and be a part of and draw a little bit more of the community into it that I’m not able to do because of that.”
