Soon after, a slew of telescopes spanning the whole electromagnetic spectrum were pointed in the direction of this event to gather further information. "The Hubble observations were the crucial thing. They made us realize that this was unusual compared to the other ones like that because, without the Hubble data, we would not have known," said Ashley Chrimes, lead author of this new study.All previous LFBOTs were found in galaxies' spiral arms, where star formation was actively taking place. However, a new study has shown that LFBOTs may even appear at much greater distances from the closest galaxy.

These neutron stars could have been in mutual orbit for billions of years, gradually drawing nearer until they collided in a cataclysmic event known as a kilonova — an explosion nearly 1,000 times more bright and powerful than a typical supernova.
