However, a new study has shown that LFBOTs may even appear at much greater distances from the closest galaxy.
These neutron stars could have been in mutual orbit for billions of years, gradually drawing nearer until they collided in a cataclysmic event known as a kilonova — an explosion nearly 1,000 times more bright and powerful than a typical supernova.
