5G pioneer Huawei has has never sold its Balong 5000 chip to rivals — but now it's open to doing so, company CEO Ren Zhengfei told CNBC.

Huawei is"open" to selling high-speed 5G chips and other silicon to rival smartphone vendors including one of its top competitors Apple, marking a significant shift in the Chinese tech giant's thinking toward its own intellectual property.

"We are open to Apple in this regard," Ren said. The CEO spoke in Mandarin, which was translated into English by an official translator. Qualcomm has a modem that can support 5G, while Intel's product isn't expected to hit the market until 2020. That means Huawei could become a viable alternative if Apple wants to released a 5G-ready phone this year. However, Huawei is facing huge political pressure, particularly from the United States, which has said the company is a national security risk because it could help the Chinese government carry out espionage. Huawei has repeatedly denied those allegations.

"Mr. Jobs was great not because he created Apple, but because he created an era, the mobile internet era," Ren told CNBC."Saying that he was great is an understatement. I think he was super-great."
