Sundowns made wholesale changes to the side that drew against Al Hilal, as only Cassius Mailula and Marcelo Allende retained their positions, with Moroccan defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil handed his first start.
The Brazilians were patient on their build-ups early on and Haashim Domingo came close to breaking the deadlock on 21 minutes with a volley that was saved by goalkeeper Jean Nyeck at the near post. Rulani Mokwena's charges increased their pressure going forward as Rushine De Reuck also came close four minutes later with a header that was smothered by Nyeck after a cross by Allende.
The home side kept on threatening and Mailula had a chance in the box just before interval with a strike that was tipped over the crossbar by Nyeck. However, Coton Sport's resistance was finally broken on the stroke of half-time after Marie Mekong deflected Terrence Mashego's cross into his own net, as the Brazilians went to the interval with a narrow lead.Pieterse, De Reuck, Mbule, Boutouil, Kekana, Mashego, Mkhulise, Allende, Domingo, Mailula, Maema
