HSBC is expected to tell staff today that it will downsize and quit its Canary Wharf headquarters where it has held its main UK presence for more than two decades.
The bank is planning to move to the refurbished former BT office, located in the vicinity of St Paul’s, The Times reported, marking a pullback on space to 556,000 square foot, which is about half the size of its current 45-floor tower at 8 Canada Square. “We will now begin more detailed discussions on a potential lease, with the intention to move in late 2026,” Hinshaw said in the memo.
The lender signalled a likely move to staff in September and said at the time it was considering a variety of offices. HSBC said in February 2021 it would trim its global office space by up to 40%, and in September told staff this included reducing its Canada Square space by a quarter to reduce costs and energy use.
