The move will mean the new fleet of HS2 trains currently on order will only be able to reach their 225mph capacity for a maximum of 50 minuteswill lead to fewer local services on the West Coast main line and could result in higher rail fares, experts have warned.
These trains will then have to join the West Coast main line at Lichfield in Staffordshire, where they will have to slow down by at least 100mph to reach any other destination. Given that the HS2 northern leg has been axed, passengers could be left with no choice but to pay for a more expensive high speed train between London and Manchester, even though the journey time is only being cut by 30 minutes.
“Still, passengers can take heart apparently from the fact that HS2 trains will continue on existing tracks into Leeds and Manchester, more ‘half speed 2’ than ‘HS2’.”
