HP’s EliteBoard G1a breathes fresh air into keyboard PC concept back with modern AI hardware and modular design.

From early home computers like the Commodore 64 to more recent products like the Raspberry Pi 400, the idea of housing a computer inside a keyboard has surfaced repeatedly over the decades. Its concept, however, never reached the level of sophistication that would make it mainstream.

HP introduced at CES 2026 is not a reinvention of that idea, but a modern, enterprise-focused refinement of it. The company’s new EliteBoard G1a Next Gen AI PC packages a full desktop-class system into a slim keyboard designed for today’s flexible, hybrid work environments. The company unveiled the EliteBoard G1a as part of its broader push to rethink how professionals interact with desk-based computing. According to the company’s 2025 Work Relationship Index, only 44 percent of workers believe their current technology fits their working style. It positions the EliteBoard as a response to this disconnect, targeting users who move between workspaces and need hardware that can adapt without sacrificing performance or security.Unlike traditional all-in-one desktops that integrate components into a monitor, the EliteBoard places the entire system inside a keyboard weighing under 1.7 pounds and measuring just 12 millimeters thick. Users connect it directly to an external display, pair it with the included Bluetooth mouse, and effectively create a full desktop setup that can be packed away and redeployed with minimal effort.A familiar idea, built for modern enterprise needsKeyboard computers have existed since the late 1970s, but those earlier systems were either limited in capability or aimed at hobbyists and education rather than professional use. HP’s EliteBoard G1a differs in that it is designed as a modern business PC, complete with modular internals, enterprise security features, and AI acceleration.Inside the keyboard, the company has integrated an AMD Ryzen AI 300-series processor, along with RAM, storage, cooling hardware, stereo speakers, and dual microphones. The device qualifies as a Copilot+ PC and delivers more than 50 TOPS of AI performance through its neural processing unit, enabling AI-assisted workloads to run locally. According to the tech giant, this setup is intended to keep next-generation applications responsive without relying heavily on cloud processing. The Verge reported that while the EliteBoard is unlikely to outperform traditional desktops or high-end small-form-factor PCs, its performance should be sufficient for office productivity and everyday professional workloads. Processor options range from AMD Ryzen AI 5 to Ryzen AI 7 Pro configurations, paired with integrated Radeon graphics.Modularity, portability, and availabilityOne area where the EliteBoard stands out is serviceability. Users can remove the bottom cover to replace components such as RAM, SSDs, speakers, fans, the Wi-Fi module, or the optional battery. Even the keyboard surface itself can be swapped out, a design choice that aligns with enterprise maintenance and longevity requirements. The EliteBoard G1a supports up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM and up to 2TB of SSD storage, depending on configuration. It can drive up to 2 4K external displays via daisy-chaining and includes options such as a fingerprint sensor, backlighting, spill resistance, and MIL-STD 810 durability certification. The Silicon Valley firm offers the EliteBoard with either an attached or detachable USB-C cable. Models equipped with a 35Wh battery are rated for around 3.5 hours of active use, while non-battery versions are lighter and intended for stationary setups. HP highlighted that its thermal design ensures users do not feel heat while typing, and the system carries TÜV certification for low noise.Security is handled through HP Wolf Security for Business, which provides hardware-level protection against firmware attacks and supports enterprise endpoint security. While the keyboard PC concept itself is not new, this execution reflects how the idea has evolved. The EliteBoard G1a will be available on HP.com in March, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
