“Howard Hanna’s decision to restrict other brokers like Redfin from displaying its customers’ listings on our websites and mobile applications will limit how many buyers see those listings,” Redfin said in a statement.

has opted to make its website a Virtual Office Website, or VOW, which would require registration, but it would also give consumers access to more non-confidential information than standard MLS sites. And for Hoby Hanna, the chief executive officer of Howard Hanna, that is one of the company’s aims.

“Howard Hanna’s decision to restrict other brokers like Redfin from displaying its customers’ listings on our websites and mobile applications will limit how many buyers see those listings,” the statement said in part. “On Redfin.com alone, half a million potential Cleveland-area buyers browse listings each month. Losing access to those buyers can’t be best for Howard Hanna’s listing customers.

“A lot of consumers aren’t logged in,” a spokesperson said. “They don’t necessarily know that they need to log in to see all the listings. So it’s kind of an interesting tactic that they’ve pursued.”“I think their concerns could be how it affects their business model, but that’s not why we did this. We did this to affect our business model. And we truly believe that having a greater transparency for the consumer is important. So, we think we’ll have more information than Redfin has,” he said.
