, YouTube and the other major internet platforms have brought a wide ranges of benefits to society. As she rightly says, the openness of online technology has led to new economic opportunities, stronger communities and openings for enhanced learning. But she props up a straw man when she suggests that “a rising chorus of policymakers, press and pundits are questioning whether an open platform is valuable... or even viable.
What is true is that the internet is being weaponized by political actors, including foreign actors like the Russian, Iranian, and Chinese governments, but also a wide range of political actors here at home. While their interests and perspective vary greatly, what they have in common is a recognition that the internet offers an extraordinary mechanism to manipulate public discourse by presenting false or misleading words and images to advance their causes.
