This Pride month, we asked young LGBTQ+ people around the country to document their lives via video diaries, journal entries, photos, and art. Welcome to StatesofPride 🌈✨
Pride is a celebration. Often a citywide parade or festival, Pride is where we march and dance through the streets to celebrate our history, our lives, and our futures as LGBTQ+ people..
, and to exist publicly. We continue to protest police brutality, state violence, and systemic oppression. We fight to build the better world we believe in.due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing imperatives prevented us from gathering together, even in small groups. But in late May, after the killing of George Floyd, the people of Minneapolis led the country — and many countries around the world — in protests against police brutality.
So, how do we honor the legacy of Pride and the anniversary of the Stonewall riots amid a pandemic and an uprising against police violence? We continue to fight for collective liberation, as so many across the country do, including the estimatedliberation for all marginalized people. Our lives and our freedom are intertwined, and Pride is nothing without community.
This Pride month, we asked young LGBTQ+ people around the country to document their lives via video diaries, journal entries, photos, and art. The interactive map below contains snapshots from June 2020. The participants, ages 16-24, are visual artists, organizers, students, poets, dancers, musicians, essential workers, makeup artists, gardeners, writers, skaters, outdoor enthusiasts, drag performers, gamers, and more.
In editing these diaries, we found ourselves in awe of each participant’s honesty, openness, creativity, compassion, and resolve. They shared their feelings so generously that parts of this project feel like a gift; they cracked our hearts open with their words again and again. We hope their stories light a fire in you, too. Happy Pride.
