Personal care might not seem like the most urgent priority as you help your loved one adjust to the daily reality of life with a dementia diagnosis, but just like anyone else, seniors with dementia feel better about themselves when they feel confident about how they look.
When it comes to the everyday challenges of living with dementia, it’s easy to overlook things like styling hair or choosing an outfit. Maintaining hygiene and personal grooming routines can also help them avoid more serious health issues as dementia symptoms progress. Institute on Aging’s Companioa is an integrated group of programs designed to support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.
Use music. Research shows that memories and music are closely linked. Music can also be a powerful tool for emotional regulation, and sometimes seniors with dementia become angry or upset when they need help with a task they used to be able to do themselves. You can use a playlist of upbeat or calming songs during daily self-care time to help them remember tasks, as well as improve their mood while they go through their routine.
If you’re helping them dress themselves, you can make it easier for them by laying out clothes in the order they’re supposed to be put on, or handing them one thing at a time, giving clear step-by-step instructions. Update the bathroom with safety features. This will help you and your loved one alike feel more comfortable with their grooming and hygiene habits.
