Justin Baldoni, Ted Bunch and Don McPherson share their insights on the importance of raising boys to not feel constricted by outdated notions of gender and masculinity, and the multiple positive impacts it would have on boys' and men's lives and society as a whole.
—explained, “We have to first look at our own preconceived notions about gender and about how boys should be and how girls should be. That's the really important piece as a parent and as an educator: I want to provide enough space where that student or my child can share who they are with me. We really have to create an environment that allows space for them to unfold who they are and not dictate who that is going to be.
When boys are able to grow up as their authentic selves and embrace the full range of human attributes, they may, as Baldoni alluded to, also be more likely to grow into men who more naturally take on caregiving responsibilities and be more present and involved fathers.
Another way in which gender roles can restrict and harm boys is that many boys learn from an early age that they should repress their feelings. “Our boys are taught to not express their feelings or emotions except for anger,” said Bunch. “At four years old, when they cry, they're told to stop crying. They're told to suck it up. They're told all these things that don't allow the emotions to be expressed. So that emotion becomes anger.
