Raising Rian Forestier: How two mothers raised one the nation's top basketball recruits
Shortly after Rian signed the scholarship form sitting on the table draped in cardinal and gold, her mother, Denise , embraced her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Rian 's other mother, Yami Garcia , could only sit back and smile. Photo opportunities followed, and there were plenty of them. Photos with family. Photos with teammates. Photos with friends, including several who played on opposing high school teams. Seemingly everyone wanted a photo with Rian .
They met in 1988 when Denise worked a summer job at San Antonio Parks and Recreation and played on a volleyball team there with Yami’s sister. When Denise recruited Yami to play on their team, their relationship blossomed. They never married, but they had a fully committed relationship. They wanted to have children, but as a same-sex couple, they didn’t know what options they had. They considered adoption, but quickly realized their relationship status made it complicated.
