The Sankofa bird is reaching back to the past to bring things forward, and that’s what we do: We use our past to protect our future.It had been Cornelia’s dream to reintroduce an heirloom crop to Sapelo, using it—along with the story of the Gullah Geechee people—to raise awareness of the island and its plight. After she passed away, Maurice partnered with the University of Georgia, continuing the relationship his mother built there and hoping to bring that dream to fruition.
