She's become a tired trope on our screens post-Fleabag - but the relatable heroine who makes bad decisions is still going strong in pop

released “Blank Space”. This is a song centred on the lyric “So it’s gonna be forever/Or it’s gonna go down in flames” – two options that are essentially neutral to Swift in the song. She sings of being “reckless”, of having relationships for the purpose of narrative and, far from the self-aggrandising of the early 2000s icons, being “a nightmare dressed like a daydream”.

Rodrigo isn’t the only star continuing the trend into the 2020s. Anne-Marie’s recent song “Unhealthy” opens with the line “your love is worse than cigarettes” – before progressing to a chorus in which she gives in: “Well, if it’s unhealthy then I don’t give a damn/’Cause even if it kills me, I’ll always take your hand”. On “Anti-Hero”, Taylor Swift’s biggest song from her 2022 album, she sings : “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me”.

Like TV’s messy women before them, the women in these songs reject the idea of perfectionism and self-restraint that have been so prevalent in the previous two decades, be it through diet culture and plastic-surgery filters or slut-shaming and online moralising.Unlike TV, where archetypes quickly become tired through intense scrutinisation at a remove, listening to pop music is an experience we feel directly involved in.

Pop thrives on relatability and a good narrative: the two traits that make “Bad Idea, Right?” easily Rodrigo’s best song yet, and also the two traits that define our loved, hated and ubiquitous messy heroines. Rodrigo is a star for a generation who have grown up online, watching lives become content, turning experience into identity. She is their perfect icon, and, while she may have met her end on TV, pop music is the messy woman’s perfect home.
