President Donald Trump’s effort to renovate the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has drawn renewed scrutiny over its rising costs after Trump shared an AI-sourced social media post depicting Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Nancy Pelosi submerged in sewage.
The Truth Social post shifted attention back onto the project itself, which has been compared with previous administrations that approached similar repairs to the iconic landmark. This includes how much they spent and how Trump’s claims of savings stack up against the record. Trump’s decision to share an AI‑generated image depicting Obama, Biden, and Nancy Pelosi submerged in sewage has sparked fierce criticism from some Democrats as well as praise from some conservatives, comparing Trump's renovations to those of prior presidents. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, stretching more than 2,000 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, has faced long‑standing structural issues, including leaks, algae buildup, and water‑quality problems.
It is one of the most iconic civic landmarks in the United States. Trump ordered the latest renovation in April, framing it as part of preparations for the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The current work includes waterproofing the pool’s basin, repairing leaking joints, installing new filtration equipment and repainting the pool bottom a shade Trump has called “American flag blue.
” To meet an accelerated timeline, the Interior Department awarded a no‑bid contract to Virginia‑based Atlantic Industrial Coatings, invoking an emergency exemption to bypass competitive bidding. From 2010 to 2012, the Obama administration oversaw a major reflecting pool renovation that cost about $34 million. That project addressed structural repairs but did not permanently resolve all leakage issues.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration considered a far more extensive reconstruction, estimated by Trump to have a price tag of hundreds of millions of dollars, though the precise figure is disputed. The proposal was never fully implemented.
“Just like they covered my Landslide 2024 Presidential Election Victory inaccurately, and without shame, constantly making major mistakes and incorrect predictions at every path along the way, they are now trying to justify Obama and Biden’s expensively botched attempt at fixing the long broken, unsightly, and unsanitary Reflecting Pool that NOW sits majestically between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on May 12. Trump has argued his approach treats the reflecting pool like a “highly sophisticated swimming pool,” allowing faster and cheaper work.
He initially said the project would cost about $1.8 million and take just weeks. “It won’t leak, it will shine, and be the pride of Washington D.C. for decades to come,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I saved more than 390 Million Dollars, and 4 years of no ‘mess,’ and was, of course, given no credit by the biased New York Times. ”
