“We’ve been giving a lot of support to our local Black Lives Matter chapter,” says Figgins, who explained that Trans Queer Pueblo has been fighting for years to get police out of Phoenix Pride celebrations.
“That’s definitely a victory that happened because of so much hard work by especially trans, migrant women of color who really led the charge on that, who really put their bodies on the line for several years blocking pride and were faced with police violence and retaliations.” Actions like these have caused Trans Queer Pueblo to experience anger and discrimination from within the LGBTQ community.
“There’s a big thing we try to teach at Trans Queer Pueblo, that LGBTQ identities were always present in indigenous cultures for thousands of years…It wasn’t until colonialism, actually, and the imposition of a very violent form of Christianity that made those identities unacceptable.”“For years, we’ve been trying to take Pride back to its radical roots,” said Figgins, “Because we see how the work of trans women of color, of Sylvia Rivera, of Marsha P.
