Can’t find hand sanitizer? Stay calm and follow these tips
By Nicole Nguyen Updated March 11, 2020 12:25 pm ET Earlier this week, at the drugstore a block from my office, I came face-to-face with a new sign taped to the cash register: “Currently out of stock on masks and hand sanitizers, thank you.” The woman behind the counter said staff was tired of repeating themselves. Online, I thought naively, I’ll have better luck.
Still, with more products listed every day, how can people protect themselves from the virus and avoid getting fleeced during the pandemonium? Soap can be more effective than sanitizer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, washing hands with soap and water is more effective than hand sanitizer for removing certain kinds of germs. Sanitizer also loses its effectiveness when hands become soiled or greasy, the CDC says.
A Walmart spokesman said the retailer is working directly with suppliers to replenish high-demand items as soon as possible. A $10 minimum was required for checkout and the sanitizer was only $5.79, so I decided to trek to Safeway myself. Indeed, there was a 32-ounce bottle on the shelf. It’s important to note that the alert doesn’t reserve the product for you, so you’ll need to act quickly when you receive it. Look for small text that reads, “Ships from and sold by.” If the seller is a third party, it’ll say, “Sold by [seller’s name] and Fulfilled by Amazon.” Click the link attached to the third party’s name to read its reviews. Is it a mix of very positive and very negative reviews? No reviews at all? Do reviews mention that received items were expired or appeared counterfeit?
