Hiking in San Diego County is an excellent way to get out in nature, but in the middle of summer, it can also be dangerous as weather temperatures soar.
Before heading out for a hike, be sure to tell a friend or family member where you’ll be hiking, especially if you won’t have cell service. It’s also wise to avoid hiking in the desert and inland parts of the county, where summer temperatures regularly reach into the 90s and higher. Instead, opt for a coastal hike like at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve or a shady mountain area in the Lagunas, while still heeding the safety precautions listed below.
Intense hiking also decreases the body’s electrolytes, which are minerals that help the body produce energy and contract its muscles. Consider bringing salty snacks andto add to water, or pack an electrolyte drink like Gatorade or Vitamin Water. It’s generally best to avoid adding electrolyte-infused water to a hydration pack, though, because the sugar in the electrolytes can cause bacteria and mold to grow.
Don’t forget to hydrate before the hike, too.
