It's time to shine at your next job interview: remove some stress by getting ready to answer so-called STAR questions.
Job interviews are rated high among stressful events. Although they should always be seen as a two-way street, the interviewee goes through several stages when preparing for a job interview. To remove some stress from the job interview process, it’s always good to prepare oneself for potential questions.
Almost all job interviews will have at least one so-called STAR question and you can very well prepare for it.A job interview is your moment to shine. You’ve made it this far, finally meet your future manager and/or colleagues, and get to ask all your questions. It’s also a great opportunity to show which skills you master and which are difficult to show on your CV, your soft skills. Be it interpersonal skills, conflict management or stress management - the interviewers will want to know more about you and how you handle certain situations. That is why the S-T-A-R method is a frequently used job interview method. When the moment comes and you hear the interviewer ask a question starting with “Tell me about a situation where…”, “When was the last time that…”, your STAR radar goes off and you structure your reply the following way:ituation: give a short overview of the situation - who was involved, when did it happen, what exactly happened. Try not to spend too much time explaining the situation, your interviewer only needs a rough idea of it. The more important parts come afterwards.ask: you enter into the situation. What were you tasked to do in the explained situation? What was your role?ction: Next, you explain which action you took. This is where you can take your interviewer through your thought process and explain why you did what you did. It’s your moment to shine!esult: Don’t end your story with a cliffhanger! Share the results of your actions - what was the outcome? What result did you achieve thanks to your actions? This is a great opportunity to share your learnings about this situation as well.Knowing the structure and purpose of each part of the S-T-A-R interview questions is an excellent start to get ready for a job interview. The next step would be to prepare your answers to very common STAR questions. It is more about having specific examples in mind and not learning the entire structure by heart.
