Texans can see a recently discovered comet this month with binoculars, and maybe the naked eye

, it could still be a treat for stargazers — especially since astronomers believe it has been more than 50,000 years since this comet last passed Earth, and it could be many millions of years before it returns.

Comets are frozen leftovers from the formation of the solar system. They're made of frozen gases, rocks and dust. As they get close to the sun, comets heat up and spew gases and dust into a glowing head. This material forms a tail that stretches millions of miles. Dan Bartlett spotted the comet in June Lake, Calif., as a fuzzy smudge in his binoculars. But he was able to get a much better view —— by using a telescope and digital camera. The telescope tracked the comet as the camera took pictures with a long exposure to capture light reflected off the comet.
