Clean out your medicine cabinet for the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 27.As a manufacturer of prescription opioids, we understand and appreciate the collaboration that goes into making sure medications are taken as prescribed, managed effectively, and appropriately discontinued when they are no longer needed. Another key component of appropriately managing medications is for patients or caregivers to remove all unused, unneeded or expired medications from the home.

The National Community Pharmacists Association estimates that up to 40 percent of dispensed prescription medications are not completely used during treatment and are likely to remain in the home, where they may not be securely stored.

Dispose of unused, unneeded and expired prescription and over the counter medications to help prevent harm, drug addiction and overdose deaths.Safe disposal programs are supported by the Drug Enforcement Administration , the Food and Drug Administration , and the Environmental Protection Agency .There are initiatives across the country that address the safe disposal of medications and there are many ways to dispose of these unused medications.
