However, Hoult did also audition for the role of the Dark Knight in 2022's The Batman, before losing out on the role to Robert Pattinson.

Interestingly enough, the newest movie trailer to feature Nicholas Hoult provides a pretty insightful update on this matter, even though the film itself isn't tied to Batman or superheroes in the slightest - making it all the more impressive that it still unveils a series of fascinating glimpses at what Hoult's Dark Knight could have been like for viewers.
How To Rob A Bank's Trailer Provides A Surprisingly Good Insight To What Nicholas Hoult's Batman Would've Looked Like On the surface, How To Rob A Bank couldn't have given Nicholas Hoult a more different role to Batman, with the actor playing Ryan, the main character in the movie, and the orchestrator behind a range of bank heists that are shared by the crew who carry them out on social media to seemingly encourage others to do the same. However, in actuality, the character immediately provides some glimpses into what Hoult's version of Batman would have looked like.
First and foremost, the maskless Ryan has a look that's strikingly similar to Robert Pattinson's unmasked Bruce Wayne in The Batman, with dark clothes, dark makeup around his eyes where skin would otherwise be revealed under his mask, and a somewhat brooding expression for a portion of the trailer. While Ryan's mask is designed around a wolf rather than a bat, even this looks strikingly close to what Hoult would have been like in action in the batsuit - particularly because we see it in use when Ryan is putting fear into John Reilly's Agent West in a decidedly Batman-like moment of interrogation.
Even Hoult's side eye in the mask has a certain Dark Knight quality to it, making the trailer all the more interesting for those who've been curious about what the alternate universe wherein the actor became Batman rather than the DCU's Lex Luthor could have been like. How To Rob A Bank's Trailer Is Proof Nicholas Hoult Would Have Been A Solid Batman Casting Robert Pattinson is a stellar Batman casting, but How To Rob A Bank further illustrates that Nicholas Hoult could have been a solid fit for the role too if things had gone differently.
First and foremost, the movie is a testament to the actor's range, with Hoult able to fit in as perfectly as a disillusioned bank heist orchestrator as he was a billionaire supervillain in Superman, an unhinged king in The Great, or a chrome-huffing member of a sci-fi dystopia in Mad Max: Fury Road. More than that, though, Ryan demonstrates Hoult's capacity to play a member of society who has glimpsed some of the corruption and unfairness within it - which is suggested to have been behind the death of one of his loved ones in the trailer - and who seeks to try and balance the proverbial scales the only way he knows how.
Though Ryan goes about this through organized crime rather than vigilante work, the character does seem to have some notable crossover with Batman in terms of their characterization, which further suggests Hoult could have nailed his performance as the Dark Knight. That said, it does seem How To Rob A Bank will be a solid replacement for those who wanted to see the actor playing a character along these lines, even if Ryan's path in the movie already takes a very different path to anything we've seen on the big screen regarding Batman himself
