First Amendment advocate Greg Lukianoff wants parents to teach kids methods that build trust.

free speech. As president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression , he tracks and resists the arms race to sanction unpopular, or even repulsive, ideas on campuses and in offices. In a new book, “The Canceling of the American Mind,” Lukianoff and Rikki Schlott, a colleague at FIRE, argue that this hostility is weakening Americans’ social ties. They take up the story from 2018’s “The Coddling of the American Mind,” which Lukianoff wrote with psychologist Jonathan Haidt.

By the end of the day, they had to explain the other person’s life. That’s teaching empathy. That’s teaching theory of mind. Also it gives kids a sense of: These other parts of the country, they have really different challenges, but they’re all flesh and blood people who are responding to real threats in their lives. This goes very much with my theory of freedom of speech: It’s just valuable to know what people really think and why.

I puzzle a lot over the fact that we don’t have much communication across regional and class lines. And I am uncomfortable with the idea of there being a national service requirement. But if part of school was to go to a different part of the country and work side by side with someone who grew up in a completely different environment, that could be incredibly healthy.I would love to have more people teaching kids for whom this is the second thing they’ve done.
