As spring approaches, preparation for fire season should come sooner than you might think.
“Once we go snow free in places like Unalaska on March 2nd, the dry, dead grass is very susceptible to igniting,” said Alaska Fire Service’s Public Affairs Specialist, Beth Ipsen. “That is a perfect example of wildfires can happen at any time once we go snow free in certain areas.
” While this season in particular has seen significant snowfall in areas like the Interior, that doesn’t quite dictate the severity of the fire season, though preparations are already being made. “We’re starting to prepare,” Ipsen said. “We’re starting with our training, doing refresher training, doing additional training. We’re already starting that.” As the Alaska Fire Service gets ready for the summer ahead, Alaskans can also do their part to protect themselves and their homes as spring comes to a close. It’s important to plan ahead, whether that’s landscaping and pruning trees, replacing roofs or making repairs, according to Ipsen. ”What you have failed to do within 30 years, a firefighter can’t do in 30 minutes," Ipsen said. “When we’re responding to a fire and protecting a community, it’s always better when we go into a place that’s already had some work done to it.”offer several interactive maps that provide a number of services, ranging from measuring the distance of fires from your home to fire season statistics.
