It's OK to give yourself grace.
that while fasting for Ramadan doesn’t change eating habits or behaviors in general, it may trigger those struggling with or vulnerable to eating disorders. Eating disorders are another area of concern the Muslim community needs to have more awareness of. If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, avoid pressuring them about food. Doing so may lead to binging later.
But eating disorders aren't the only mental health condition that might exempt you from fasting. If fasting is inway unsafe for you, causing harm, or potentially putting you in danger – perhaps because of needing mental health medications, or suffering from withdrawals because of substance use disorder – then your religious obligation at that time is tofast.
Many Muslims who experience substance use disorder struggle in silence. Getting treatment can already be difficult, but even more so for Muslims who may have difficulty finding a treatment program that’s culturally competent.
If you’re struggling, telling trusted friends or community members/leaders can help. Thanks to social media, there are many ways to be in community, even if you’re physically distant from a mosque or don’t know many Muslims in your area.
