How to stop feeling pressured into doing things you already said you wouldn't
Sometimes, excelling in our personal and professional lives requires us to make sacrifices, show up for other people, and do what must be done in order to achieve a certain outcome.
It’s about both honoring that as well as what you need to feel comfortable, healthy, and happy long-term. The two are not mutually exclusive. Remember that when you’re setting boundaries, you need to be cognizant of your professional duties, how much you value your relationships, or what you need to show up for in order to perform as best as possible. However, you can keep all of this in mind while still setting limits for yourself in terms of comfortability. The most important aspect of not allowing your “no” to turn into a negotiation is that you do not justify your boundary.
You can explain your position if you're asked, but if you say “no,” and then offer a laundry list of excuses as to why you’re deciding this, it weakens your stance.that it’s the right thing to do. If someone perceives you as feeling guilty about your choice, it’s a lot easier to manipulate you into changing it.The reality is that sometimes, if we pass on a project, we pass on the bonus. If we don’t show up for a friend, it could be a letdown for them.
As long as you are aware of the potential consequences that would arise by declining whatever it is you’re saying “no” to, then you can decide whether or not you would be willing to incur them. In most cases, it is more important to prioritize your wellbeing and dignity over anything else, and in many others, the person on the receiving end will be more understanding than you’d think.
