A Neuberger Berman investment chief says he's identified 3 overlooked ways to profit from world-changing 5G technology — and shares the stock picks best-suited for all of them

"Almost every aspect of our lives is likely to be changed by the coming of 5G," wrote Hari Ramanan, the investment chief for research funds at the firm and manager of its Next Generation Connectivity Portfolio, and Y.T. Boon, its director of Asian equity research. Ramanan is building a track record that demands attention in this area. As of June 30, his strategy had returned 15.2% annually since its inception at the beginning of 2018. Its benchmark, the MSCI All-Country World Index, returned 2.9% over the same time. His firm, Neuberger Berman, managed $357 billion in client assets as of June 30. In a research paper, the duo argue that there are three major ways to invest in the transformative aspects of 5G technology that are going mostly unrecognized by the stock market. They found more than a dozen companies that get at least half their earnings growth from 5G-related products and technology. And while 5G is still brand-new, they suggest it's not too soon to start thinking about what will come after it. "These are not household names and their relevance to the 5G and 6G theme is arguably underappreciated," wrote Ramanan and Boon., but Ramanan and Boon say there are a couple of specific areas that aren't getting the attention they deserve.
