5 energy efficiency schemes for your home, and how much they could actually save you

Homeowners could be missing out on thousands of pounds of support from the Government to help bring down energy usage in their homes and keep their electricity and gas bills even lower.

Heat pumps are an energy-efficient way of heating a home, with an average cost of between £8,000 and £14,000 to install. The total cost of a pump over an average 15-year lifetime, including the system, installation and running costs, could save households £60-£110 per year, when compared to a gas boiler, according to the charity Nesta.

In phase two of the LAD scheme, an extra £300m was allocated between five “Local Net Zero Hubs” that worked with local authorities in the North East, North West, Midlands, South East and South West of England to fund additional retrofits. Depending on the local authority, the scheme funded upgrades like insulation, heat pumps, energy-efficient doors and windows, and solar panels and was generally open to those with D or lower EPC ratings and lower household incomes.
