For children, losing a grandparent is often their first encounter with the death. We spoke with Ilze Lee, founder of The Never Alone Project, for some guidance on how parents can best navigate what for many, is a tricky subject.
‘Avoid confusion by minimising the use of words such as “loss”, “gone to a better place”, or “no longer with us”,’ Ilze advises.
‘Using directs words when talking about death is painful, but less confusing. You can explain to your child in an age-appropriate way that the body has stopped working and reassure them that Grandma feels no pain or sadness in her body.’It can be hard for children to make sense of what has happened, and their emotions may be all over the place.
‘Tell them how it happens in your culture, how long the funeral will be, a brief run through of what will happen. Give them the opportunity to ask questions. Teach them that it might be different for people from other cultures.’Inform the school of the bereavement, so that they are aware and able to support your child during difficult times.‘Expect an interruption in their normal behaviour, but try to keep to their routine,’ Ilze advises.
