Less than two years since ChatGPT started a technology frenzy like no other, there is growing evidence that the hype machine is slowing down. This month, we saw a aas part of what is now a much fuzzier picture around the cost vs. value ratio for a technology prophesied to reshape humanity. The numbers aren't adding up, and while money keeps pouring into AI, very few companies are turning a profit on the tech, which remains hugely expensive to build and run.
Up until now this has been a bullish race among technology leaders, who let's face it make their own rules based on speed and specter, often with little pause for the lessons of the past especially as it relates toDr Tarika Barrett, CEO of Girls Who Code, and co-chair of NY Governor Kathy Hochul's emerging technology advisory board, is more aware than most of the cost of exclusion in the tech sector.
For Barrett, a Dr in education and long term diversity advocate, she believes the most important message we need to remind ourselves is that AI and all its hype, is a human led phenomenon. It's not something that is happening to us but rather something that we can actively shape, and academia, government, and industry have a responsibility to ensure inclusive thinking. When it comes to AI, the risks of allowing the hype to take hold are higher than ever before.
