Windows 11 Widgets are a screen-hogging wasted opportunity - here's how to remove them from your PC
It’s five months since Windows 11 was launched and yet one of its most disappointing features shows no sign of improvement: Widgets.
The Widgets are activated by pressing the blue-and-white icon that is automatically installed on the Taskbar or by pressing Windows Key + W. When pressed, half the screen is taken up by a feed of largely useless information: weather forecasts, sports results, thumbnails from your photo libraries and news stories.
The Widgets could be so much better if Microsoft opened them up to third-party apps and let you customize what appeared in that pane. Instead, you’re left to pick from a handful of Microsoft’s own apps and services, with Microsoft using Widgets as little more than a screen-hogging marketing opportunity.
For example, not only does Microsoft fill the news feed with stories from its own MSN feeds, but if you click on a story to read further, it opens in the Microsoft Edge browser - irrespective of your choice of default browser. It’s just another of the many ways that Microsoft attempts to foist Edge on Windows 11 users. However, we’re yet to see any official confirmation from Microsoft.
