🔴 Experts say there are other ways for bill payers to protest without putting themselves at personal risk We look at the main options available to help those who will be hardest hit by the energy price cap rise ⤵️

But Don’t Pay says it is “consulting extensively” with legal experts.: “We have been clear about the risks of not paying your bills, however, the risk of continuing to pay extortionate prices is far higher and is what is driving people into poverty.”However, solicitor Gary Rycroft, a partner at Lancaster-based law firm Joseph A.

“It’s a perfectly legitimate means to register inability to pay – in effect a protest without putting yourself at personal risk,” he says. When you call them, explain the problem and what you want them to do. You can complain by email, letter or telephone. Keep records of contact you have with the company.

“You’ll need to give details of your financial situation, so do a basic budget first so you know what money you have coming in and going out. You’ll be asked for this so the company can work out how much help you need.” Energy companies should write to you to tell you how to do this at eight weeks or when you hit a “deadlock”. This is when neither of you can reach an agreement.

“This is more obvious with billing errors and regulatory breaches,” says Mr James. “But given that the firms are obliged to help people in financial difficulties, the failure to do so, or make things worse, is something the Ombudsman can consider as part of a complaint.”
