Tips on how to buy the perfect sofa:
When it comes to buying furniture, a sofa is the most stressful piece of the bunch. It can be wildly expensive, is the workhorse—and, often, the focal point—of the living room, and, of course, needs to be supremely comfortable. Not to mention that it can be utterly baffling to sort out the well-constructed from the will-replace-it-in-two-years models.
Here, some of our favorite interior designers and furniture-makers break down the six things to look for:When it comes to comfort, cushions are the first thing to consider. The most common filling is polyurethane foam, which is cushy but not terribly durable and will flatten over time. Pure feather- or down-filled options are deliciously soft, but need frequent fluffing and will eventually bunch up.
Before you commit to a fabric, get a look at it in person. “Request swatches of the fabrics and colors you love, bring them home, and spend the time to make sure it is a choice you feel great about,” suggestsThe best and longest-lasting sofas have double-doweled joints fitted with corner blocks that are then both glued and screwed into place. Also look for a kiln-dried frame made from hardwood like oak, beech, or maple: It will retain its shape over time.
