How to Automate Your Morning Routine with Samsung's Modes and Routines

Learn how to use Samsung's Modes and Routines feature to create custom automations for your mornings and beyond. From waking up to smart home controls, this guide covers setup, triggers, actions, and examples.

Samsung Galaxy devices offer a powerful yet often overlooked feature called Modes and Routines that allows users to automate various tasks and behaviors of their phones.

While many users are familiar with basic settings like Do Not Disturb, Modes and Routines takes automation to a new level by providing a flexible if-this-then-that system. You can create custom routines that trigger automatically based on conditions such as time, location, app usage, or even the dismissal of an alarm. This system is particularly useful for streamlining morning routines, helping you start your day smoothly without having to manually adjust multiple settings each day.

For example, you can set a routine that activates when your morning alarm is dismissed: it can unmute your phone, increase media volume to a comfortable level, turn on your smart lights, start brewing coffee via a smart plug, and even read out your daily briefing or play a podcast. The possibilities are almost endless, and the best part is that once you set it up, everything happens automatically.

To get started with Modes and Routines, you first need to ensure that Samsung's Customization Service is enabled on your device. This can typically be found in the Settings under Advanced Features or directly by searching for Modes and Routines. Once enabled, open the Modes and Routines app from your settings menu. You'll see a list of suggested modes like Sleep, Driving, and Theater, which can be customized to your liking.

However, to create a truly personalized morning routine, you'll want to tap on the Routines tab and then the + icon in the top right corner. This will take you to the routine creation screen, where you'll define a trigger (the If condition) and an action (the Then condition). For the trigger, you can choose from various options such as time of day, location, app opened, or even specific conditions like when a particular Bluetooth device connects.

For the action, you can set multiple steps, including adjusting system settings (volume, brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), opening apps, sending messages, or controlling smart home devices. After defining your If and Then conditions, simply tap Save and enter a name for your routine. Your new routine will now be active and run automatically whenever the trigger condition is met. While the concept is straightforward, the real power lies in combining multiple triggers and actions to create complex automations.

For instance, you can create a Good Morning routine that starts at 7 AM daily: it can turn off your phone's silent mode, set the volume to 70%, turn on Wi-Fi, open your favorite news app, and adjust your smart thermostat. You can also use location-based triggers to silence your phone when you arrive at work or activate a Driving mode when your car's Bluetooth connects.

Moreover, Samsung offers a Discover tab where you can explore pre-built routines created by Samsung and other users. These can serve as inspiration or be used as-is. For those who don't own a Samsung Galaxy device, Android phones have alternatives like Google Assistant Routines or third-party apps like Tasker, which offer even more customization but with a steeper learning curve.

Nevertheless, Samsung's implementation is user-friendly and integrates seamlessly with other Samsung services and SmartThings devices. By leveraging Modes and Routines, you can save time and mental energy by automating repetitive tasks, allowing you to focus on more important things. With a little creativity, you can transform your phone into a personal assistant that adapts to your daily life
