How Tina Fey and Robert Carlock Brought Kimmy Schmidt Back to Life (Dammit!)

Kimmy Schmidt is making a comeback—with a little help from Netflix's choose-your-own-adventure technology

interactive special was announced last year, a few months after the series’ final episodes premiered on Netflix. But the special has actually been in development far longer than that. The streaming service approached Fey and Carlock about the idea months beforethe first Netflix interactive feature, launched to acclaim in December 2018.

“I think we all really enjoyed the puzzle of writing a story and then being able to figure out paths around it, and dead ends and diversions,” Fey told“I think that actually having worked with the characters for four years, it was a really exciting new challenge.
