Chariot racing drove the gambling underworld.
Summary Chariot racing is at the heart of the corruption and greed that drives the drama in Peacock's new epic series Those About to Die, and the show does a good job of showing exactly how complex Ancient Roman chariot racing teams were. Starring Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins, Iwan Rheon and Sara Martins , Those About to Die provides an in-depth look at the gambling underworld associated with chariot racing in the Circus Maximus of Rome.
1 Chariot Teams Had Owners There was a ton of money backing each team Those About to Die is set at the very end of the reign of Emperor Vespasian circa 79 AD, and at that point in time there were still four primary chariot racing teams, or factions. Per WorldHistory.org, the Blue, Green, Red, and White factions were all well-established by then, which was why the creation of the new Gold faction caused such an uproar.
Each Chariot Faction Had The Equivalent Of Its Own Pit Crew They assisted with preparation of the horses and equipment Each faction had substantial financial backing thanks to the owners, sponsors, and investors, and as a result the actual racing teams were well-equipped at all times.
Each Faction Had Its Own Fans Even some emperors were avid fans Close Those About to Die centers around one charioteer in particular: Scorpus, the experienced and beloved driver who had reached celebrity status. Most charioteers were very young men, typically around 12 or 13 years of age when they began training.
