While in jail, this Five Keys student completed his high school diploma and earned a full scholarship to attend Academy of Art University upon his release.. According to the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, by 2020, two-thirds of jobs in the U.S. economy will require some education or job training beyond high school. For this reason, expanding opportunities for education beyond high school is urgent and necessary.
DeShawn is among the Five Keys students who have built a future they could never before have imagined. “Five Keys is the family, the father figure, that I always needed coming up as a youth,” he explains. Now he hopes to use art, music, and film to share, in his words, his “knowledge and experience of living in America as a young black man of poverty.”
