Some races and runners took conventional approaches to virtual races, others met their self-challenges with grit, patience, and some ingenuity.
It turns out, I was not alone in a quest to replenish that competitive spirit by any means necessary. The running community proved to be ingenious during nationwide stay-at-home orders by finding innovative ways to run and race together. From challenging other people over their computers to setting records in their own hometowns, here are some of the best ways runners kept pushing themselves to reach their goals during the pandemic.

The first runner in the group to find the spot would take a selfie and share it in a message board thread. Once the orignal poster signs off on the successful find, that runner would post the next scavenger hunt location.
Tip: Not into scavenger hunts? Your running group can stay connected in other ways with things like virtual group workouts and GPS art challenges. You just need a leader to set the rules, then go.Backyard ultras—a last-runner-standing race—is as mentally taxing as it is physically demanding.
