How three beekeepers stay true to themselves while taking care of their bees, and how their suits and personal style protect them 🐝
The function of the beekeeper suit is utility. It’s to keep us safe by protecting us from getting stung, [but] it’s also to keep the bees safe. A lighter pastel color keeps the bees calm; colors can either calm or agitate the bees. When the bees are calmer, they don’t want to sting you. When bees sting, they die.There are times when we wouldn’t necessarily wear a beekeeping suit, usually when swarm-catching because swarms are usually docile.
If the queen has defensive genes in her, she’s going to have really tough babies. It does help the strength of the colony though, then you don’t have as many problems with diseases likeTV:We mostly paint the hive boxes. We haven’t added our own style into the suit, but I’ve incorporated it into the equipment. I love pink, so I have a pink hive tool. We also paint our boxes in all different colors.The suit, we don’t really use because it gets dirty very quickly, and we don’t really glam it up.
I use fashion and beekeeping if I’m having a down day. I’ll dress in brighter colors or a floral print that makes me feel happy. That’ a protective coping mechanism for me too.I’m a chef by trade, and our chef jackets are made with a thick canvas to prevent hot oil burns, and it’s also flame retardant. Most women chefs don’t consider the cut flattering, so now women’s jackets have curvy cuts and styles to show their feminine side while protecting them from kitchen fires.
