First published in 1724,"A General History of the Pyrates," right, laid a foundation for many popular notions about piracy. The unidentified author, who wrote under the pen name Captain Charles Johnson, provided detailed accounts of notorious pirates as well as the origins behind the Jolly Roger.
A tsunami followed the earthquake, which scientists believe measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, making it a “major” event. By the time the catastrophe had ended, most of Port Royal, including the cemetery where Henry Morgan was buried, lay beneath the watery depths. As many as 2,000 people were killed immediately, and thousands more died soon after.Newspapers reported firsthand accounts of the chaos and terror in Port Royal caused by the 1692 earthquake.
Recovered from the sunken site of Port Royal, a jewelry box was fashioned from turtle shells, which were plentiful around the pirate haven.In the harbor’s clouded waters, visibility was limited for divers, who could barely see a hand held before their faces. They often resorted to working by touch alone, groping in the ooze.
