'Free agents with no salary cap': How transfer portal, NIL impact college football coaches
UTSA coach Jeff Traylor was among those at this year's Bear Bryant Awards who've seen their jobs radically change because of the transfer portal and NIL.Normally Jeff Traylor would welcome his son Jordan Traylor back across the Sabine River so the two could work together. And Jeff Traylor, like a handful of his fellow finalists, addressed an ongoing simmering topic in college football: how have coaches’ lives changed since players have been able to transfer without sitting out a season, and also are able to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness . Sonny Dykes, who led TCU to the national title game in his first season in Fort Worth, found himself in an awkward but enviable position last week: hosting multiple players who’d suited up for competitors across the country in the months prior.
Dykes and the No. 3 Horned Frogs, who upset No. 2 Michigan in the College Football Playoff semifinals,with a 65-7 loss to top-ranked Georgia and another Bryant Award finalist in Kirby Smart.
