A win, and the Rangers are in. Two losses, and their playoff fate is out of their hands.
A few things to keep in mind: the AL West champion will be the No. 2 seed in the playoffs; no one can catch the top-seeded Baltimore Orioles , and the third-seeded Minnesota Twins of the AL Central can’t catch any possible AL West winner. In the case of the Wild Card, the Tampa Bay Rays are locked into the No. 4 seed, while the Rangers, the Houston Astros, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Mariners will fight for the fifth and sixth seeds.
A win over Seattle on Saturday would give the Rangers a record of 90-71 and, more importantly, secure a better season record than the Mariners — who’d be 87-74 with one game left to play between the two — to clinch the third AL Wild CardIf the Rangers split these final two games with the Mariners, they’d finish the regular season with a record of 90-72.
The Astros could go 0-2 against the Diamondbacks, finish with 88 wins and leave the Rangers and Mariners tied for first record-wise in the division; in this scenario, the Rangers would be AL West champions by way of head-to-head record against Seattle this season. The Astros could go 1-1 against the Diamondbacks, and create a three-way tie atop the AL West standings. In this scenario, the tiebreaker would be decided by the combined record of each team against the other two: Seattle would be 14-12 vs. the other two, Houston is 13-13 and the Rangers would be 12-14. It would place the Mariners first, Houston second and the Rangers third.
