Immigration minister Robert Jenrick told MPs the process of “exiting” the first tranche of accommodation will begin in the coming days.
A group of migrants attempt to cross the Channel – the busiest shipping lane in the world – on 29 August. In a statement to the Commons, he said the plans are possible because of “the progress we’ve made to stop the boats”.
It is early days, however, with around 350 asylum hotels still thought to be in use, with the latest cost of around £8m-a-day unlikely to be substantially reduced to a level which will command public support. This has helped reduce the increasing pressure on asylum accommodation triggered by ever-increasing numbers of Channel crossings in recent years.
French authorities have meanwhile in recent weeks installed barriers in waterways in the north of the country to make it harder for people smugglers to launch their “flimsy dinghies”, according to Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick.
