Let’s take a look at the two Eagles touchdowns vs. the Browns and how they exploited man coverage.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Browns secondary has had challenges with tackling in the run game and during zone coverage under defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Surprisingly, many players in this elite group have struggled most with man coverage. As with all aspects of football, a player’s success heavily relies on teammates fulfilling their roles, and man coverage is no different.

This rapid release allows defensive backs to anticipate short routes, reducing the time they need to cover receivers. Along with the pressure, defensive backs rely on their defensive coordinators to mix man and zone coverages to hide the fact they are man coverage.
As Calcaterra “Cheetah” motions out to the sideline, Cameron Mitchell follows, indicating man coverage to Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. With safety Rodney McLeod deep, shading toward Brown, the Browns are in a man, cover-1 look with a five-man pressure. The fifth man on the pressure is linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah though the A-gap of the Eagle’s offensive line.
Hurts effectively uses his eyes to hold McLeod on the hash, preventing him from providing over-the-top help to Emerson. If Hurts were to focus on Brown throughout, McLeod could easily shift over and possibly intercept the pass. The Eagles come out in 12 personnel with two receivers to the offensive left side with both tight ends close on the right side. The Browns counter the two-tight end look with five true defensive linemen, one linebacker, and five defensive backs.
