They will help Ukraine both in defence and offence, especially against the T-72, which is Russia’s main battle tank. Russia was estimated to have more than 2,000 in service when the invasion began and thousands more in reserve.
Dr Martin Smith, a senior lecturer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, said: “The Challengers, Abrams and Leopard tanks are better protected and better armed than most versions of Russia’s T72. “It is clear that Russian forces are fortifying their positions in the southern oblasts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, and [without these tanks] it is unlikely we will see further Ukrainian advances like those in Kharkiv and Kherson in the autumn, which owed more to Russian weakness and over-extension than Ukrainian military strength.”
