What exactly is it?
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary An object so powerful that even the Aes Sedai themselves can’t overcome, the a’dam is among the most dangerous weapons in The Wheel of Time’s world. The Wheel of Time season 2, episode 6, titled “The Eyes of Pity” explores the depths of misery a person can sink to when under the thrall of an a’dam. Used by the Seanchan, the a’dam is a horrific tool of enslavement both in the TV series and the Wheel of Time books.
Not unlike her book counterpart, Egwene al’Vere fell victim to the Seanchan. Having been “collared,” the character is now powerless against her captors, who can use the a’dam to effortlessly keep her in line. Egwene has been described as one of the most powerful female channelers to enter the White Tower in recent times, yet that hardly matters when it comes to the a’dam, which prevents her from using the One Power against the show’s Seanchan slavers.
What The A’dam Actually Is In The Wheel of Time How such a device can actually exist in The Wheel of Time is explained by the books, with the show also offering some degree of insight into that as well. As Elayne remarks in “The Eyes of Pity,” the a’dam is a ter’angreal, a major concept in The Wheel of Time books. Objects infused with the One Power, ter’angreal have a wide range of uses and come in all sorts of different forms.
Being made with the One Power is what allows it to function, which explains why it works – as Elayne says – without a latch or a seam. Designed centuries ago by an Aes Sedai, it was built to be used by two people, both of which being women capable of channeling. Through the One Power, the a’dam creates a link between the pair, granting one control over the other and how she uses the One Power.
Can The A’dam Be Removed? In “The Eyes of Pity,” the possibility of freeing Egwene from the a’dam was discussed, but a complete solution hasn’t been found. Nynaeve observed that the device “cannot be broken.” However, the book versions of the characters did manage to free Egwene from the a’dam when her sul’dam, Renna, wasn't around. This act culminates in Renna becoming collared herself.
