Ryan Gosling on the red carpet for The Fall Guy
Star Wars may have gotten itself into a troubling predicament when it comes to new Star Wars movies and potentially upcoming Star Wars TV shows as well. The future of Star Wars remains an interesting question mark, with many things on the horizon, most of which feel experimental to some degree.
This is true of Star Wars' next movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as the movie that will seemingly be released after that one, Star Wars: Starfighter. Both movies will break new ground in the franchise, not only as non-Skywalker Saga installments entirely separate from those characters, but also because of their unique focuses. The Mandalorian and Grogu, for example, represents the first movie spin-off from a show, and while we know little about Starfighter, it already feels like something brand-new for Star Wars movies and TV shows. Despite that, Star Wars is facing a major issue in its future, and it has much more to do with how these stories may be similar. Star Wars Has Painted Itself Into A Corner Thanks To The Mandalorian Era Recent shows and upcoming movies seem fixated on the Mandalorian Era of the Star Wars timeline, not only with shows like The Mandalorian, but also with shows like Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and even Skeleton Crew, based on its place in the timeline. In large part, the exploration has focused on the fallout from the destruction of the Empire and how the galaxy is picking up the pieces. This includes the Imperial Remnant and lingering Imperial sympathizers, some of whom feign loyalty to the New Republic but are actually fully committed to the Empire, even after its fall. This has been a compelling storyline, and the Ahsoka finale set it up to become more so, as Thrawn has returned to the main galaxy. Grand Admiral Thrawn poses such a significant threat, in fact, that many suspect he will be the main villain in The Mandalorian and Grogu, with the specific aim of restoring the Empire under his rule. That is only speculative for now, but it highlights just how important the Mandalorian Era currently is and how it emphasizes the ways the galaxy is recovering after the Empire. Unfortunately, the sequel trilogy means that the future of Star Wars is in danger of feeling redundant in upcoming movies and potentially shows. Because the sequel trilogy essentially recreated the Empire, though named the First Order, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker saw the First Order crumble just as the Empire once had, this story may feel repeated. That is, Star Wars could suffer significantly from an overused or redundant storyline if the Mandalorian Era explores how the galaxy recovered after the Empire, only for the movies set after the sequels to do the exact same thing with the First Order. However, there is hope, if Star Wars uses Starfighter effectively. Starfighter Can Fix This By Making A Massive Change To The Galaxy It's already confirmed that Starfighter is set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, which means it will define this brand-new era and lay the foundation for the movies and shows to come that are set after the sequels. Thus, Starfighter may very well be the Star Wars project that cements whether the franchise has this aforementioned problem. It's possible for Starfighter to avoid this pitfall, so long as it makes one drastic, shocking change to the galaxy. If Starfighter revealed not a centralized galaxy, as we have seen in all three trilogies, but rather a segmented galaxy with no galactic government in place, then it would not feel like a recycled story but rather thrilling new territory. Even when the Empire ruled the galaxy ruthlessly, and despite there long being Outer Rim planets, there has been a centralized government that united a significant portion of the galaxy in Star Wars since the beginning of the movies and shows. Chronologically, this was first the Republic, then the Empire, then the New Republic, then the First Order. Yet, Star Wars cannot keep this status quo and repeat this pattern in the future if it wants to truly feel innovative and prove the franchise is moving forward. Instead, Starfighter could potentially reveal that the galaxy has fatigue from this constant back-and-forth and has opted not to try yet again to unite the galaxy via one core government. This Would Make Starfighter A Bold New Story For Star Wars This would obviously be radical for a Star Wars movie, and it would have interesting implications for other Star Wars projects thought to be in the works and set after the sequels. Rey's Star Wars movie, rumored to be titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order, is just one example. If there is indeed no central Republic or similar government, what could that mean for a Jedi Order? Whether that movie eventually comes or not , this would have significant implications moving forward, such as in Simon Kinberg's upcoming Star Wars trilogy. While that may seem too radical, it would prove that Star Wars is truly ready to break the mold—something that many felt the sequels were far from doing, to their detriment. It remains to be seen whether Star Wars: Starfighter would really take such a big risk, but it would indeed mean a bold new era of Star Wars.
