Vaccinating 55 per cent of healthy people under 65 would provide greater protection to vulnerable people, a new report has found.
A mass flu vaccination of NSW residents that costs $81 million would save 500 lives every year, a new report says.
NSW Productivity Commissioner Peter Achterstraat said public health strategies focused on vaccinating the elderly, pregnant women, children under five and those who are immunocompromised, but shifting focus to preventing transmission between healthy people would provide greater protection to vulnerable people.
The commissioner said researchers primarily reviewed data taken from Ontario in Canada – where the flu vaccine had been free for everyone since 2000 – that show flu-related deaths had declined from 15 deaths per 100,000 to four. “There hasn’t been a real emphasis between the five-year-olds and the 65-year-olds, even though these people are fit or whatever, they have a greater chance of passing on the flu to other people because they’re out and about a bit more, and we think that if what we’ve found is taken on board, it will have a big impact,” he said.
